This is some very big news - imagine being presented with exactly what you're looking for, before you've even begun to look for it!

Mayer explains that the process will encompass “local search, maps, Earth, latitude, and all the local products.”

So, in a nutshell, once Google has your location and has syphoned information from your web browser; what you've been searching for, what site's you've visited etc etc, et voila!, the search giant will then attempt to make educated guesses based on what it reckons you might be interested in - you needn't even go near that chin to scratch while you think of the correct search terminology, thanks Google.

From an advertisers perspective, if you're already optimising for local searches, Contextual Discovery is undeniably going to be doing some very effective (and free!) advertising for you. So make sure your focus is much more on location based searches in time for next year's launch, and watch out -… 1 http://www.marmaladeontoast.co.uk/news/107/contextual+discovery+what%3F?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=News Sun, 24 Jul 2011 20:13:00 +0100 Gmail gets a facelift

Hold onto your hats email marketeers, Gmail, the notoriously difficult to please email client, is about to get a new look, but what will this mean for folk like us?

General consensus seems to be the new face of Gmail takes up a lot more space and therefore displays less information, not really two results that fill you with confidence, I for one reverted to old favourite, 'Classic', as soon as my curiosity was satisfied.

The design has been brought in to match the new style's that have graced the Google brand recently, with the launch of Google+ it would appear the search giant has decided to freshen up it's look across the board. Designed by Andy Hertzfeld, an original Macintosh designer, and in-keeping with the minimalistic approach that has followed Google through it's entire growth, the new theme for Gmail is quite stark in comparison to other email clients, which might mean it's very gentle on the eyes but you do get a sense of space-gone-overboard. The defining lines between messages aren't clear and when coupled with a view that accommodates a 'Priority Inbox', 'To Do' and 'To Send' the whole page just looks misguided.

… 1 http://www.marmaladeontoast.co.uk/news/105/gmail+gets+a+facelift?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=News Fri, 22 Jul 2011 11:08:00 +0100 Le Facebook is a ‘Faux Pas’

The French government has decided that mention of the giant social networking site ‘Facebook’, and for that matter ‘Twitter’ is forbidden. A very strong ‘’Non’’ has come down from on high banning French broadcast media from mentioning either of the two sites.

The French, it seems, have a 1992 law that prevents the any mention of private business that could be either seen as promotion or advertising on either TV or Radio. It would be interesting to know why the French government Broadcasting Authority took so long to remember that they actually had this decree that prevents new media marketing. The Guardian points out that they obviously forgot about it when President Nicolas Sarkozy was actually given a Facebook T Shirt from the social network founder, Mark Zuckerberg.

It is not all bad; the crux of the matter lies in the fact that broadcast media can still mention the two social networking sites, just not recommend that their audience to follow the story on either of them by name. Business social media marketing campaigns do not look as if they will be affected by the ban. In fact the main area of damage will be the broadcasters themselves, they will not… 1 http://www.marmaladeontoast.co.uk/news/83/le+facebook+is+a+%E2%80%98faux+pas%E2%80%99?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=News
