Businesses Taking Social Media Seriously

Picture the scene, you have just bought a new car, but felt slightly emotional about letting the old one go. Your car dealer offers to take a photo of you with both your new and old car to remind you of those good times you had. This happened to someone at a forecourt in Baltimore recently, and she was put in touch by the garage with the new owner of her old car via Facebook. This and other such examples are typical of the innovative ways in which some companies are embracing social media marketing.

Why Social Media Marketing?

Some businesses may pose the question “What’s the point? Why social media marketing?” Sites such as Twitter and Facebook began as places for people to kill a few spare moments between tasks, to catch up with friends or arrange parties. Nowadays, with social media applications being used on smartphones and other mobile devices, much more frequently businesses are starting to see the point.

Rapid Growth

As use of social media sites has diversified from the early-adopter towards the mainstream, usage and crucially site traffic has mushroomed. Facebook has over 500 million registered users, and its own statistics state that over half of these users check the site every day. A carefully planned and co-ordinated Facebook campaign could reach the best part of a quarter of a billion people, every day. Research carried out by social media experts has also indicated that if businesses interact fully with their customers using platforms such as Facebook, it creates interest and traffic that can be converted into sales and profit.
